reading the comments below asking if this would still have such an impact if it wasn't HP related....
That's not really the purpose of art now is it?
Art is supposed to make you FEEL something on a relatable level. It is supposed to make you think (and it did achieve that much for the ones asking the questions)
Art is supposed to capture a moment, either on a personal level or on a level that everyone can relate to, depending on the time period.
the twin towers in my generation.
the space shuttle exploding on the previous.
JFK portrait for the one before that.
and all throughout history there are religious paintings, portraits of rulers, martyrs, cities and landmarks that made enough people FEEL and THINK that they were determined to preserve those moments forever in museums.
It's not a bad thing if you look at a piece and don't feel anything about the subject. but when it comes to fan art, just let the fans have their moment. you may never understand it. you don't have to. just don't ruin it for them by saying "i don't ever know what the big deal is..."
I didn't get into this world until about 2002...i think... i don't remember the date. only that i saw Chamber of Secrets in the theatre and only because my sisters MADE ME watch the first movie on New Years Eve. I had refused to read the books until then. But i enjoyed the first movie so much i had to start reading the books. I had just finished the second book when the second movie came out.
And I was hooked. I devoured all of the books until I was caught up. I was in the hospital with my first son while I read half blood prince. And I was sad when I finally got to the end of Deathly Hallows.
So yeah.... when I see anything related to HP i don't just feel something for the characters. Each book takes me back to a very specific time in my life. I think about friends who are no longer in my life. I think about the house I was living in at the time. I think about family that has passed on. They're memory triggers for me.
I never was particularly attached to Fred and George, but that's entirely beside the point. I am capable of empathising with what is being conveyed here. anyone who has lost a loved one should be able to do that much.
