A digital painting of my boyfriend eating a cookie done for a school assignment
i love his funny grey hair :)
we're supposed to do a portrait in the contemporary realist style... so...yeah here it is!

I used the method where you do the full underpainting in greyscale to get the values, then did a color layer on top of that and I'm pretty happy with it :)

edit: cleaned it up a bit, couple refinements :D

i've seen that technique used quite a bit, it seems to reduce the amount of color-switching done in the final stages and give a bit more depth to the values. I like it a lot!

What program did you do this in? I'm guessing you did the colors on a different layer... was it on top of below the greyscale, and what layer settings? Like, multiply, overlay, etc? :) If you don't mind sharing your tools of the trade... I am fascinated by this style of digital painting - it's absolutely gorgeous! I just LOVE that you have so much personality in this as well as phenomenal technical skill!

photoshop cs3!
The bottom layer is a greyscale layer, I did all of my values on that layer first. It was a finished black and white painting before I moved onto the next part.
then there's a layer set to color on top of that which I just added the colors in on
and then there's a correction layer on top of that which I fixed a few things on (in color... though for some of it i went back down to the greyscale layer and fixed them on there)
then there's a color adjustment layer and a texture layer to try to even out all of the tones so it doesn't look so digital.

i'll do a tutorial on it someday maybe

Ooh, I would LOVE if you could do a tutorial! Though your description is quite good, too. Thank you so much. I think I will try this. :)
